The Society mooted this project to preserve a scheduled monument and to ensure the local communities of Ferryhill and Torry could safely cross over the River Dee to each other’s area. It was also a safety project as the bridge spanned not only the river but also Riverside Drive an extremely busy road. Many pedestrians had been hurt when crossing near the bridge and there was even one fatality. Aberdeen City Council funded the project with financial assistance from Historic Scotland. The bridge had been closed for a few years due to safety issues. One particular occasion was the annual boat race on the River Dee. The bridge had to be closed, as the council was concerned that the amount of people viewing the race from the bridge might cause more structural damage and a loss of life or accidents. Now with the restoration completed the local residents have again a safe crossing.
